  • The Stokes exhibit's opening was part of the Cleveland State University Library's Black History Month Celebration, which was held on February 19, 2002 in Special Collections. Former Congressman Louis Stokes, who was guest Louis and Cordell Stokesof honor at the celebration, is seen here at the exhibit with his nephew (the son of the former Mayor) Cordell Stokes. Congressman Stokes helped launch the e-book version of his brother's autobiography, Promises of Power, giving a powerful speech about the life of Carl B. Stokes. Cordell Stokes, along with Regennia Williams, Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Cleveland State University (pictured below), was also part of the afternoon's program.

Guests at this event were given a special preview of the Library's new web site, The Cleveland Memory Project, which will be a showcase for the Library's Special Collections, and a gateway to images, text, maps and more about the history of Greater Cleveland and the Western Reserve Region of Northeast Ohio.

Also making its debut at this special event was the Notable Blacks of Cleveland online exhibit, a major addition to Cleveland Memory. Notable Blacks is a searchable database of approximately 2,000 images of hundreds of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the history and development of Cleveland.
