How to Find the Electronic Course Reserves You Need

  • Two things you need to know before you start searching Electronic Course Reserves are your instructor's name (at least the last name) and the course number.
  • Click on Begin Using ECR Now!
  • The SCHOLAR Course Reserves screen will appear, giving you the option to search for your materials by entering a professor’s last name or course number. This time we're going to do a search by the professor's last name.

    ECR Opening Screen
  • In this example we have chosen "Search By Professor Name" and have entered the name "ASPELIN".

  • We then get a list of Professor Aspelin's courses for which there are reserve material available. We'll click on the link for ANT 352.

  • The next screen shows us what is on reserve for Antrhopology 352. In this case there is a link to 3 chapters from the book, Native Peoples of South America by Steward & Faron. The chapters are "WEB ACCESSIBLE" .

  • You will then be asked to read and accept the CSU Library Fair Use Guide, click the “Yes, I Agree to the Fair Use Guidelines” button.
  • Screen shot of first page of PDF file. Finally, the first page of chapter 1 from Native peoples in South America will open up in Adobe Acrobat Reader allowing you to read, print or save the entire PDF file. For more information on how to do this, see What You Need to Make Them Work.
  • A more direct approach might have been choosing "Search By Course" which would have taken you directly to the screen with the link to Native peoples in South America, saving you much time. Or if you were not sure of the exact course number when doing a "Search by Course", you could just enter the department name, in this case, Anthropology.

Tip: When searching by course number, make sure you leave a space between the letter portion and the number portion - ANT 352, not ANT352. You'll get better results.

Electronic Course Reserves can come in different formats. This particular example was a PDF file (Portable Document Format) requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader. Other ECRs may be in simple html code, requiring just your browser or they may be audio files, requiring RealPlayer.
