Importing References into RefWorks

Attention: The Library will be cancelling its subscription to RefWorks effective June 30, 2017. After that date, students, faculty, staff and alumni will not be able to use RefWorks through the library's subscription. Read more about the cancellation and how you can save your RefWorks citations to a new platform.

EBSCO Databases

Please follow these instructions for importing references from EBSCO databases:

  1. Add items to the folder by clicking on the folder in each reference.

  2. Click on Folder icon on the blue row of choices.

  3. “Select” the references to export.

  4. Click Export icon (text with green arrow).

  5. Choose Direct Export to RefWorks.

  6. Click Save button.

  7. RefWorksshould open in a new window. Log in with your account information.

  8. References will be imported and found in your Last Imported folder.

PubMed Databases

Please follow these instructions for importing references from PubMed Databases:

  1. Perform a search and mark the references you want to export.

  2. Change the Display option from Summary to MEDLINE.

  3. In the Send To drop-down, select Text.  A window opens with just the references in MEDLINE format.  

  4. Select Save As from your browser and select Text as the Save As file type.

  5. Log in to RefWorks.

  6. Select References/Import from the toolbar.

  7. Select NLM PubMed as the data source and as the database.

  8. Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.

  9. Click Import.

  10. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Scholar Online Catalog

Please follow these instructions for importing references from Scholar:

  1. Search the catalog

  2. Select items by clicking on the Save Citation button. Save Citation button

  3. When you are finished searching, click on the View Saved button. View Saved button

  4. Select End-Note/Refworks under Format of List.

  5. Select Local Disk under Send List To.

  6. Mark the citations to export under Your List of Saved Records.

  7. Click on the Submit button.

  8. Click on Save File in the Opening export txt box. Save the document as a Text (.txt) File.

  9. Go to RefWorks.

  10. Under References, click on Import.

  11. For Import Filter/Data Source, select Cleveland State University Library.

  12. For Database, select Cleveland State University [Innovative Interfaces (Endnote/RefWorks Format)].

  13. Under Import Data from the following Text File, click on Browse to locate the file, select the file and click on Open, and then click on Import.

  14. Click on View Last Imported Folder.

  15. Click on Edit to add missing information if necessary.

  16. Select citations, select the folder where you want to add them, and then remove them from the Last Imported Folder.

 

OhioLINK Central Catalog

Please follow these instructions for importing references from the OhioLINK Central Catalog:

  1. Search the catalog

  2. Select items by marking and clicking on Save Marked Records from the Results List, or click on the Save for Export button from each item.

  3. When you are finished searching, click on the View Saved button.

  4. Select End-Note/Refworks under Format of List.

  5. Select Local Disk under Send List To.

  6. Mark the citations to export under Your List of Saved Records.

  7. Click on the Submit button.

  8. Click on Save File in the Opening export txt box. Save the document as a Text (.txt) File.

  9. Go to RefWorks.

  10. Under References, click on Import.

  11. For Import Filter/Data Source, select Cleveland State University Library.

  12. For Database, select Cleveland State University [Innovative Interfaces (Endnote/RefWorks Format)].

  13. Under Import Data from the following Text File, click on Browse to locate the file, select the file and click on Open, and then click on Import.
