According to the printed guide, Part 1 of the "Black Power Movement" covers the work of Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), one of the most prolific and influential African American writers of the 20th century.

Author of over 20 plays, 7 books of nonfiction, 2 novels and 12 volumes of poetry, Baraka is credited with having “galvanized a second Black Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement.” This collection documents his journey from leadership of the Black Arts movement to leadership in national Black Power politics. Its 9 reels of microfilm collect rare works of Baraka’s poetry, organizational records, print publications, over 100 articles, poems, plays, or speeches by Baraka, a small amount of personal correspondence, and transcripts of oral histories.
