In order to comply with the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code), the Cleveland State University Library Reserve Service has adopted the policies stated below. The policies apply to all print, non-print, and electronic items.
Faculty members may place Cleveland State University Library books, personal copies of books, reprints from journals, chapters from books, class notes, practice exams, homework assignments, syllabi, audio cassettes, video cassettes, CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc. on Reserve in the Cleveland State University Library.
- If the Library owns the particular journal or work the reprint has been taken from, copyright permission will not be requested.
- When necessary, the Reserve Service of Cleveland State University Library will contact the Copyright Clearance Center or publisher for permission to reproduce materials to be place on Reserve.
- Any charge incurred in obtaining the permission, or in reproducing the materials will be borne by the University Library. The Reserve Area will place no more than one photocopy on Reserve. All photocopies will be placed on Electronic Course Reserve (ECR). The only exception would be those materials, which are unable to be placed on ECR. The Reserve Service will place the determined number of copies on Reserve while simultaneously requesting copyright permission when applicable. If permission is denied, the material will then be removed and the faculty member will be informed, so that substitutions may be made.
- The Reserve Service will keep records of all materials copied with permission for five years.
- Copied material for which no permission to copy has been secured or proven will be placed on Reserve for one semester only and then destroyed by the Reserve Service.
