Review Agenda Ė
Fund Raising/Endowment Funds
H. Baird Tenney said the Friends are here to publicize the many benefits of the Library to the community. The Friends are also here to assist the Library and encourage people to make gifts.
A discussion began regarding the purchase of a copier for Special Collections. The cost of purchasing a copier for use in Special Collections is too high. The group decided to focus on the preservation of the Plat books because it fits into the concept of developing the Special Collections effort. It is in our list of needs, and the community might be more interested in contributing to this effort.
Some ways to protect the Platt books:
Tour Cleveland Public Library
Touring the Cleveland Public Library is on hold because of cost. AlternativeóThe Friends can invite a speaker to the Michael Schwartz Library to talk about the CPLís renovation and why it was done.
Scholars & Artists Event/Sacred Landmarks Collection
Group discussed details of the Scholars & Artists event --Friday, October 15, 1999.
The next event after the Scholars & Artists Event was the Charles Chesnutt discussion on Friday, November 12. Baird reported that Adrienne Gosselin, Associate Professor of English, was interested in being a part of the program.
Ohio Library Council
The Ohio Library Council held their statewide meeting in October (September 30 Ė October 2). Lenore Koppel reported that she would be there. Tom Flechtner also said he might attend.
The group discussed the Friends of the Library newsletter. Among other items, the group decided to include the Ruth Prawer Jhabvala book review, articles about the Scholars & Artists event, and Richard Petersonís talk about Project: LEARN.
The book sale is going well and will continue to be a daily event.
The group discussed inviting Chris Sheridan as our next speaker in late February or early March. The discussion would focus on the Cleveland school system problem. A motion was made that the group should spend no more than $200 on this event. All voted in favor of this motion.
Meeting adjourned at noon
After the meeting was adjourned, Baird announced that John Horton faxed a memo from the Western Reserve Society Sons of the American Revolution reporting that the Comte René de Chambrun was nominated as an Honorary Member of the Western Reserve Society. John Horton reported that it was presented to him on September 15, 1999 in Chambrunís office. A copy of the memo is included with these minutes.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, December 2 at 11:00 a.m. in Rhodes Tower, Room 502.
